Driveways and Access

What a rural driveway renovation actually involves
Most rural driveways around Bendigo and Central Victoria were pushed in once, years ago, and have been patched ever since. A renovation puts the shape back into the surface so water leaves it, which is what stops the potholes and corrugations coming back.
1. Walk the length first
We drive and walk the whole driveway before anything starts, marking the low spots that hold water, the corners that scour, the soft patches, and any culvert or table drain that has silted up. That walk decides the order of work.
2. Rip and reclaim the material
Gravel that has been pushed to the shoulders over the years is still good material. We pull it back into the running surface rather than paying to cart new road base in, unless the base is genuinely worn out.
3. Re-crown and set the crossfall
The centre needs to sit higher than the edges so water sheds sideways within a metre or two instead of running the length of the drive. That single step does more for the life of a driveway than anything else.
4. Give the water somewhere to go
Crossfall only works if the water can leave. Table drains, mitre drains, spoon drains and culverts under the driveway take runoff away from the surface before it picks up speed.
5. Compact and finish
A reshaped surface that is not compacted turns to loose gravel in a fortnight. We finish with a smudge bar pass and compaction so the fines bind and the surface holds shape.
How long it takes
A typical rural driveway of 200 to 600 metres is a one day job if the base is sound and drainage is straightforward. Longer drives, heavy washouts or culvert work stretch that out, and we tell you which one you have at the quote, not halfway through.
