Fire Season Prep.

Bendigo based. Set up for larger jobs — acreage, open paddocks and commercial land.

    What This Means

Asset protection zones, defendable space and fuel reduction prepared before summer.

Every summer the same properties get caught out. We slash cured grass, clear around houses, sheds, tanks and pumps, cut back ladder fuels and knock fuel loads down before the Fire Danger Period is declared.

Asset protection zones are the core of this work. We manage vegetation around buildings, reduce ladder fuels and ground fuel, and clear defendable space to the requirements set for your property. Bring any Bushfire Management Statement or permit conditions to the site visit so the scope follows them.

Fire breaks are part of this service — boundary breaks, paddock divides and breaks around assets, cut and maintained to the width your council or permit sets.

If the council has issued you a fire prevention notice, bring it to the site visit. The standard on the paper is the standard we work to, and the job is photographed and documented so you have proof it was done.

Book in winter through early spring. By October the good contractors are booked out, and once the Fire Danger Period is declared, machinery work is restricted.

    The Challenge

Fuel Reduction Before The Season Turns.

Fire-season work carries a deadline that does not move. The job is completing it correctly before the ground dries and the notices arrive.

    • 01

      A Fixed Seasonal Window

The work belongs in spring; by summer it is too late or unsafe. Jobs are scheduled early so cutting happens while ground and weather permit.

    • 02

      Variable Fuel Loads

A single paddock can hold long grass, ladder fuels and thick scrub together. Each area receives the treatment it requires, rather than one approach across the lot.

    • 03

Retained Trees Within Asset Protection Zones

An APZ does not mean bare ground. Ladder fuels and low growth are reduced under retained trees, keeping their shade and wind protection intact.

    • 04

      Council Notice Compliance

Fire prevention notices specify work and deadlines. The scope follows the applicable notice, with completion photos and maintenance where needed. Photos are job records, not compliance certification or a guarantee of bushfire protection.

    • 05

      Access Into Bush Land

Fuel reduction on larger bush land depends on getting in. Breaks and access lines are established first, so the remaining work can proceed.

    Solutions

What we can do for you.

We supply the right machinery for the job. You tell us what the land needs, we work out the method.

    • Asset Protection Zones

Vegetation managed around houses, sheds, tanks and pumps.

    • Fire Breaks

Boundary, paddock and asset breaks cut and maintained.

    • Fuel Reduction

Ground fuel, scrub and ladder fuels cut down mechanically — mulched or slashed, no burning.

    • Ladder Fuel Removal

Suitable low growth beneath retained trees reduced to limit ladder fuels; this does not prevent fire.

    • Bush Property Fuel Reduction

Built-up fuel thinned across larger bush properties.

    • Defendable Space

Cleared to the requirements set for the property.

    • Fire Prevention Notices

Vegetation work scoped against the notice; completion photos are job records, not compliance certification.

    • CFA Access

Access vegetation cleared to the agreed scope; road suitability and tanker access require separate confirmation.

    • Pre-Season Slashing

Cured grass knocked down before the Fire Danger Period.

    • Shire & Agency Fuel Programs

Fuel reduction across reserves, roadsides and bushland for councils and land managers.

    • Multi-Property Fire Programs

Fire breaks and asset zones done across multiple sites for councils, farms and facilities.

    Machinery

Choosing the right machinery for the job.

Machinery selection is based on the vegetation, site access and the finish agreed with you.

Our experienced operators use machinery and attachments suited to the work. We assess the site and confirm the equipment and method before work begins.

    • Tractors with slashers

    • Tracked skid steers

    • Mulching heads

    • Brushcutter attachments

    What another year costs you.

Most people put this work off one more season. Here's what actually happens when you do, straight, no fearmongering.

    • 01Tall, dry grass can carry fast-moving fire. Shorter grass can reduce flame height, but cutting does not remove fire risk.
    • 02Failure to comply with a fire prevention notice can lead to enforcement and recovery of compulsory-work costs. Read the notice and confirm requirements with the issuing officer.
    • 03Overgrown scrub and ladder fuels against a house or shed give a fire a direct path to the building.
    • 04Fire Danger Period restrictions kick in and limit what machinery work you can do on your own property.

    Common Questions

Fire Season Prep, asked and answered.

    Fire Season Prep guides →

Do you work during the Fire Danger Period or on Total Fire Ban days?

Ironbark does not carry out machinery work on Total Fire Ban days. That is our operating policy, not a statement that every machinery activity is legally banned. During the Fire Danger Period, applicable CFA activity restrictions, site conditions and safe operating controls determine whether work can proceed.

Does fuel reduction make the property safe to defend?

No. Vegetation management can reduce fuel and improve agreed access, but it does not remove bushfire risk or guarantee a building will survive. Follow current CFA advice and maintain a separate household or site bushfire survival plan.

What is an Asset Protection Zone (APZ)?

An APZ is a managed area around a building intended to reduce bushfire exposure. Victorian planning documents commonly refer to defendable space. Its extent and vegetation standard depend on the property's approved plan or applicable requirements. It is not necessarily bare ground and does not guarantee building protection or safety during a fire.

Do I have to have an APZ?

Check your planning permit, endorsed bushfire management plan and any other site-specific conditions. A Bushfire Management Overlay identifies a planning control; it does not by itself establish the exact vegetation work required on every property. Council or a qualified bushfire adviser can confirm the requirements. Insurance conditions must be checked with your insurer.

What's the difference between an APZ and a firebreak?

An APZ or defendable space manages vegetation around a building to the applicable site requirements. A firebreak is a managed strip intended to reduce fuel continuity and support access or fire management. Neither guarantees a fire will stop. Both are included under Fire Season Prep, with their footprint and finish agreed separately.

How often does an APZ need maintaining?

Inspect regularly and maintain the vegetation standard required by the property's permit or approved plan. Growth and rainfall determine when further work is needed. One annual cut is not proof the area remains compliant throughout the season.

Do you need a permit to clear an APZ?

A permit or other approval may be required. Victorian bushfire exemptions have specific eligibility and extent limits; do not assume that an APZ, overlay or council notice makes all clearing exempt. Confirm the proposed work with council and other relevant authorities, including waterway and habitat checks, before work starts.

Do you cut firebreaks as part of this?

Yes. Firebreak cutting and maintenance are part of Fire Season Prep. Boundary breaks, paddock divisions and strips around assets are assessed against the applicable notice or plan. Width, finish, retained vegetation and any separate approvals are confirmed before work begins.

When should I book fire season prep?

Arrange assessment and approval checks well before the expected fire season, allowing for access, regrowth and weather delays. The work date depends on site conditions and current restrictions. CFA declares Fire Danger Period dates by municipality; there is no fixed statewide start date.

Do you work to CFA standards?

We scope vegetation work against the applicable council notice, permit conditions or endorsed plan, using relevant CFA guidance. Provide those documents before the site visit. Photos and job records describe completed work; they are not compliance certification, insurance acceptance or a guarantee of bushfire protection.

The council has issued me a fire prevention notice. Can you help?

Yes. Send the full notice and marked work area so we can assess the specified tasks and deadline. Confirm separate clearing approvals and contact the issuing officer if the requirements are unclear. A contractor booking does not extend the deadline or certify compliance.

Can emergency vehicles get in to my property?

We can assess vegetation clearing along an agreed access route and around turning areas. Required dimensions, load capacity and other access conditions must be confirmed from the property's approved plan or relevant authority. Vegetation clearing alone does not certify tanker access; road construction, grading and engineering are outside our scope.
