Soil, slope and terrain: why they change the clearing method

People often ask what machine we'll bring before they've described the ground. The answer depends on what's under the vegetation. Same acreage, different dirt, different gear.

Clay soils

Central Victorian clay holds water and gets slippery fast. A tracked machine is usually better than wheeled on clay because it doesn't sink or spin. We also watch the weather window, because clay that looks fine in dry conditions can turn into a mess after rain and take months to recover.

Granite and rocky ground

Around Harcourt, Redesdale and parts of Heathcote you hit granite outcrops and shallow topsoil. Mulching still works, but grading and track building needs a different approach. We don't just scrape rock, we work with the natural fall and use the right attachment so you're not left with a torn up surface.

Steep slopes

Fire runs faster uphill, so slopes below buildings need more attention. But steep ground also limits which machines can work safely. A skid steer on a steep slope is dangerous. Sometimes we work from the bottom up, sometimes we need a machine with better stability, and sometimes we recommend hand clearing for the worst spots.

Wet-weather access

If your property has a creek crossing, a low-lying flat or a driveway that turns to soup in winter, that affects when we can work and how we get in. We can grade and reinforce access, but it's cheaper to plan for it than to recover a bogged machine.

Matching the method

Forestry mulching suits thick regrowth and fire fuel reduction. Slashing handles grass and light scrub. Power rakes and box blades finish pads and tracks. We pick the tool based on the ground, the vegetation and what you want left behind.
