What happens after forestry mulching, month by month

The machine leaves, and you're standing on a property that looks completely different. Where there was head-high scrub there's now a layer of shredded mulch and open ground. Good. But the job isn't finished, and knowing what comes next stops you wasting the money you just spent.

The first few weeks

The mulch layer settles and starts breaking down. It holds moisture in the soil and stops most weed seed striking straight away, which is the big advantage over clearing and pushing everything into heaps. Don't rake it up or burn it off. It's doing work.

The first growing season

Grass comes back through the mulch on its own in most cases, thick after autumn rain. You do not need to seed unless you want a specific pasture mix. What you will also get is regrowth: blackberries, sweet briar and some native species will shoot from the rootstock. Mulching knocks the top off, it does not kill every root.

Dealing with regrowth

This is the step people skip, and it's why some mulched land looks worse two years later. Spot-spray the regrowth when it's young and soft, or get it slashed before it sets seed. One follow-up pass in the first year is usually enough to break the cycle, and it costs a fraction of the original job because the machine is only hitting scattered regrowth, not solid scrub.

Keeping it that way

After the first year it's just maintenance. An annual slash before fire season keeps grass down and stops woody regrowth getting established. Grazing does the same job if you run stock. The properties that stay clean are the ones that get touched once a year, not the ones left alone for five.
