Mulching vs hauling away: what's the difference for your property

One of the first decisions on a clearing job is whether the material stays or goes. Both options have a place, but for most rural properties around Bendigo and Central Victoria, mulching is the better answer.

What mulching does

A forestry mulcher chips trees, scrub and regrowth into small pieces and drops them on the ground. There's no pile, no burn permit and no truck waiting to haul it. The mulch suppresses regrowth, protects the soil from drying out, and reduces the fire fuel load because it doesn't sit in a heap.

What hauling away does

Hauling removes the material from site. It makes sense if you need the ground completely bare for construction, if there's no room to leave mulch, or if the material is contaminated. The downside is extra labour, trailer time, tip fees and often a burn pile you can't light for months.

Cost comparison

Mulching is usually cheaper because the material handling is done in one pass. Hauling adds a second and third step. For fire season prep, general land management and most site prep, mulching covers what you need without the extra cost.

When we recommend hauling

If you're forming a building pad and need clean compactable ground, or if the site is small and leaving mulch would create a mess, we'll suggest hauling or a mix of both. Otherwise, mulching is the go.

The regrowth question

Mulch doesn't stop regrowth forever, but it slows it down. Combined with follow up slashing, it keeps country manageable for years. Hauling leaves bare soil, which can come back faster with weeds unless it's managed.
