Slashing and clearing around Heathcote: what local land throws at you

    3 September 2026Last checked 3 September 2026

We work through the Heathcote district regularly, and it's country with its own personality. Between the granite outcrops, the box-ironbark regrowth and the creek lines choked with blackberry, a property around Heathcote, Tooborac, Argyle or Costerfield usually needs more thought than a flat paddock closer to Bendigo.

    The ground itself

Heathcote's famous red soil is beautiful until it's wet, and the granite country around the ranges doesn't forgive careless machine work. Rocky rises limit where a slasher can travel, so steep or stony sections often get mulched instead of slashed, or done with the excavator where the mulcher can't safely go.

    Box-ironbark regrowth

A lot of the district was cut over for mining and timber, and the regrowth that came back is dense, multi-stemmed and hard as nails. Once it's past waist height a slasher won't touch it. That's mulching work, and the mulcher handles it well, turning it back into open ground in a pass.

    Blackberry along the creeks

Every creek line and gully in the district seems to have its own blackberry patch. It's a declared weed, it harbours rabbits and foxes, and it's a fire hazard against your boundary. The mulcher chews it out, but the follow-up spray on regrowth is what actually finishes it. Plan for both.

    Fire preparation

Much of the district sits in serious bushfire country, and the fuel builds fast after a wet winter. Grass slashing around the house and sheds, firebreaks along boundaries and asset protection zones all need doing before the Fire Danger Period, not during it. November is when everyone calls. The ones who booked in winter get done first.
